I celebrate the story, historical and fictional, in this website. We are a storytelling animal. It is the basic way we understand the world, even in math and the hard sciences. A formula and a poem are both stories.
In HISTORY’S MICROSCOPE I write about individuals from the past—the famous, infamous, and obscure—who faced a crisis that reveals their character. This is what I find endlessly fascinating.
That being said, I don’t ignore the absurd, the comic, the silent sufferance, the sadness, and the tender moments that give life texture, and where most of us live most of the time.
In MIND WITHOUT BORDERS I focus on fiction with blogs, reviews, excerpts from my own works—historical and suspense—and other authors. Fiction is a superb pastime, but it is more than that. Fiction is the only place where we can be certain what the other person is thinking. This fits in with my obsession with character.
SWEEPINGS FROM THE DUSTBIN OF HISTORY is sort of my version Ripley’s “Believe It or Not,” which I loved as a kid.
In BIO AND SCENES FROM MY LIFE I will not only give you a general idea of who I am but every once in a while add a brief description of an event in my life—usually a situation I’ve found myself in which doesn’t seem to happen to other people. I am tempted to call some of these “flailings” because that appears to be the nature of what I do when things do not go right. Then again others belong to the category “dumb luck” because I’ve been more fortunate than unfortunate in my life.
NEW BLOGS is almost self-explanatory. I will also include quotes, images, reviews, et cetera.
